抄録: Negative aspects of interpersonal relationships harm individual physical and mental health seriously, however, research of these domains doesn't be conducted systematically. Therefore, author proposed to apply the term "interpersonal stress" as comprehensive construct of negative relationships. Next, definitions of interpersonal stress were discussed, according as definitions and contents of social support. The substance of discussion were that; (1) Negative relationships can be located on four aspects of psychosocial stress processes, which are a)antecedents of stressor, b)stressor itself; c)correlates of cognitive appraisal and coping against stressor, and d)stress responses. (2) Among all stage of psychosocial stress processes, types of negative relationships may be classified into "excess" vs. "lack" categories, as author proposed "two sides theory of interpersonal stress". (3)Narrow meanings of interpersonal stress were defined as "interpersonal stressor and/or internal conditions which are aroused by interpersonal stressor". Then, some interpretations about taijin-mamou (interpersonal dislocation: concerns about enacting smooth interpersonal interaction, Hashimoto, 1997 b) as third category of interpersonal stress, which seems to be inconsistent with two sides theory of interpersonal stress, were discussed. So, for reconsideration about classifications and associations between subcategories of interpersonal stress, Forty-three adults (two males, 41 females, mean age 40.36) and 45 student nurses (one male, 44 females, mean age 20.18) completed the open-ended questionnaire concerning interpersonal stress situation. As a result, consistent with two sides theory of interpersonal stress, excessive or withdrawn social interactions which are deviant from optimal levels of relational norms are considered as "primary interpersonal stressor". However, when psychological cost are aroused by the context of relationships (e.g., risk evalations against primary interpersonal stressor, management of trade-off between intrapersonal stress and relational strain), these situations can be categorized as "secondary interpersonal stressor", which may be identified as taijin-mamou. Finally, further issues were discussed.
